Assalam (peace) is one of the names of Allah. To say Assalamu Alaikum (peace be upon you) means that you are in the protection of Allah, as Allah be with you or in your company. Whenever you hear the Assalamu Alaikum from a Muslim, you must response with Wa Alaikum Salam.
There are 3 Forms for Response for Salam
- Wa alaykum salam (And peace be upon you)
- Wa alaykum slamu wa-rahmatullah (And peace and mercy of Allah be upon you.
- Wa alaykum salam wa-rahmatulahi wa-barakatuh (And peace and mercy and blessing of Allah be upon you)

وَعَلَيْكُم ٱلسَّلَامُ وَرَحْمَةُ اَللهِ وَبَرَكاتُهُ

Wa Alaikum Salam Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuhu
The meaning of wa alaikum salam warahmatullahi wabarakatuhu in English:
“And Peace, mercy and blessing of Allah be upon you.”
Whenever you hear or some one say ‘Assalamu Alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuhu’ to you, and your response should be ‘Wa Alaikum Salam Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuhu’.
What is the benefit of saying Assalamu Alaikum?
Narrated by Abdullah bin Amr (Radiallahu Anhu): A man asked Allah’s Messenger “Which act in Islam is the best?” The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) replied “To give food, and to salute everyone, whether you know them or not.” [by Al-Bukhari & muslim]
There are three forms for Response for Salam
- Asslamu alaykum: The response should be ‘Wa Alaikum Salam’.
- Asslamu alaykum wa Rahmatullah: The response should be ‘Wa Alaikum Salam Warahmatullah’.
- Assalamu alaykum wa Rahmatullah wa Barakatuhu: Response should eb ‘Wa Alaikum Salam Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuhu’.
The best form to be much rewarded is the complete one.
